Hello, this is James Mayer, Branch Manager, from the Huffman Mayer Paolo Wealth Management group of Wells Fargo Advisors.

One of my favorite client conversations is right before they retire. There tends to be a lot of excitement. There also is the unknown, what will I do all day, will I feel a sense of purpose, will I have enough money, and will I be bored.

That same feeling reminds me of when I learned to ride a bike. The fear of taking off those training wheels, would I fall, what if I couldn’t do it, would the other kids laugh at me, I don’t want to scratch my new helmet… Who am I kidding we didn’t have helmets!

We have been able to get my youngest riding her bike lately. She definitely has a helmet. She had the same fears, so watching her fears disappear was one of my favorite moments as a parent. The excitement, freedom and joy she experienced was just like I remember it to be.

The connection between learning to ride a bike and starting your retirement seems to take about a year in my experience. That’s when a familiar conversation happens. Usually the client is telling us about the trips they have taken, the time spent with grandchildren that they couldn’t do when they were working or the new hobbies they have picked up. Then without fail most of them reply, “I really don’t know how I used to have time to go to work?"

We always want to talk with you. Please call the office schedule an appointment.

As always stay happy, safe, and healthy and hopefully we will see you very soon.
