Hello, this is James Mayer, Branch Manager, from the Huffman Mayer Paolo Wealth Management group of Wells Fargo Advisors. 

Golf can be like investing, there are many ways to do it and trust me I have tried them all. 

One thing that you need in both is guidance. 

Let’s use this hole as an example… 

This a 509-yard par 5 with bunkers on both sides of the fairway and a green surrounded by bunkers and protected by a pond in the front… 

 

Let’s just say that I crush my drive, right down the middle and I can see the green. Now I don’t often hit it this far, and I have only hit the green in two one time, and have never eagled this hole… 

Now I must decide if I am going to go for it in two and hit a super long shot over the pond and land it on the green… or hit a 7 iron, play it safe and have a comfortable wedge in for my 3rd shot. 

“This is the choice it comes down too, this is our immortality” 

Now I have to figure out how far away I am from the green and what club I need to hit. 

I can look for the 150-yardage marker, guess how far away I am from that, then decide if I want to lay-up or go for it in two. 

“Video of you walking away from the 150 yard marker” 

Or I can use the watch that I have, and it can tell me how far I am from the green. It will tell me how far from the front, middle or back of the green. 

“Picture or video of the watch” 

Or I can ask the caddie what he thinks? 

“The rangefinder says you are 225 yards to the pin, it will take 200 yards to carry the pond, the wind is in your face, and you haven’t been hitting your woods well all day.” 

“James, this is no time to be thinking immortality, this is time to be thinking, hit the 7 iron” 

Why am I telling you about the value of good guidance on the golf course, because the same can be said of your retirement plan. You can do it alone, you can use a Digital Advisor, or you can find someone that understands you, your family, your goals, and dreams. Someone that will keep you on the course, not recommend taking unneeded risks and keep you on track the entire round….
