Hey there it’s James. Had this conversation come up a couple times this week.

Am I going to work after I retire?

So I’ve met with a number of people lately who have spent 20, 30, 40 years at the same job.

They have seniority, tons of vacation time, they are making probably the most they have ever made, saving the most they’ve ever saved in their entire life.

I think they are just done; they are burnt out, they don’t want to do this grind anymore.

20, 30, 40 years in their mind was plenty at that job and now they want to retire.

So, when we run the numbers and it makes sense that they can retire, I wonder about what are they going to do.

Some of these people in their late 50’s early 60’s are used to working 40-50+ hours a week.

There is always this discussion about:

“James I’m going to do something, pick up a part time job”

“I’m going to help Bob cut trees down or I’m going to drive a school bus, or I’m going to work at Walmart.”

But you see these people that are so ingrained in having a job that you can see how they are probably going to pick something up. Not because they need the money but because they are bored.

So the reason I am bringing this up is because I am asked to include this hypothetical income in the retirement plan. I don’t like to do it and I wont because sometimes I’ve seen people retire and guess what not going to work is fun, its cool. It’s exciting not having to go somewhere and punch a clock or having people demand or depend on you to do thing at a certain time. So, when I am setting up a retirement plan with my team for someone that says “I can retire at 59, if I live at this amount I’ll be fine. I’m going to make some income lets include that in our retirement plan.” I am very nervous to do that and I wont so we build a plan without it.
