Hello, Sunday night.
This is James Mayer.
The thought of the day is retirement.
One thing that I am almost consistently saying to clients is that when you retire, every day is a Saturday.
Every day could be the most expensive day of the week.
You are not encumbered by your job, and you might spend more because of this fact that you have more free time.
So, when we build a plan for retirement, you need to think about that.
One thing that I think compliments this thought as well is that ideally, most of our clients retire without a mortgage.
Now, that doesn't mean they're not going to have home expenses, but the principal and interest payment of their mortgage should be gone, and they still have taxes and insurance and other household expenses that you would normally have. But we might lose that, that expenditure for the home.
The other aspect is that you don't necessarily have to save.
Now, I know with some of my clients, they think this is insane.
They have to keep saving. They've been saving for 65 years. They're not going to stop now. But you don't necessarily have to save money during retirement. And the final thought is that hopefully when you're 65, the kids will be off your payroll. The expenses you have for your children throughout their lives, eventually, hopefully in my case, will fall off.
So, while every day is a Saturday when you retire, some expenses may fall away, and that can be used for more fun things. Have a great week.
We'll talk to you soon.
