Jim Huber, CFP®, ChFC® Senior Financial Advisor My first car was a '66 Mustang. It had been parked for years when I first began work on it in 1985 to get it roadworthy. During my high school and college years I spent nearly as many hours working on it as I did driving it. Later in life I owned a series of motorcycles that I used for commuting, traveling, and the occasional track day. Apart from changing tires, I did all of my own maintenance on them. So today I'm certainly capable of maintaining my cars, but I don't. I have a local mechanic that maintains my family's cars. Why? Superior tools and, most importantly, depth and breadth of experience. I don't have a lift, nor the specialized tools sometimes required for newer cars. I don't have relationships with the multitude of people from whom one can acquire parts. My mechanic has also seen many more cars with many more issues than I possibly could. Therefore, rather than do a passable job of it myself I choose to delegate the maintenance of my family's critical tools to a trusted partner who can do it better.
