Talking about money with anyone can be an uncomfortable conversation. Rope your family into that chat, and things can get even more awkward.

You’ve worked hard to build your wealth – you most likely want your family to benefit from that hard work, long after you’re gone.

But, in order for your family to know your wishes, you have to communicate what they are, exactly. That doesn’t mean they find out when your will is read and you’re long gone.

They need to know before that… Where you want your money to go, your philanthropic desires and expectations, and if this situation applies to you, how to keep the family business intact and thriving for years to come.

Did you know that more than 70-percent of a person’s wealth dissipates by the third generation? The old proverbial saying, “shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves in three generations”1

Why? I believe it’s because people fail to have the hard conversations about the future of their money.

It may be uncomfortable, but sometimes you have to get comfortable with being uncomfortable.

In our experience, these conversations are best had in a professional setting, scheduled and documented.

We can be a resource for you to hold this type of family governance meeting.  It is important that everyone’s role is defined, and expectations are clear.

The ultimate goal is for your family to understand what the future looks like so they can prepare to meet those expectations.

It’s also a chance to share the “why” behind your wealth. Explain the work it’s taken to get where you are today and why it’s important that your legacy thrives in the future.

You’re not only looking at preserving your wealth long-term -- but preserving the unity in your family for years to come.

Your time is precious. Let’s make it count.

[Social Tease: Conversations about money aren’t always fun.

But it could be one of the most important meetings you have with your family.

For your future and theirs.
