How did I become a financial advisor?

Growing up in the Iron Range of Northern Minnesota, the youngest of five children, I watched my mother struggle financially.  Barely able to make ends meet, she would substitute teach whenever she was called and then work nights at the hospital washing dishes.  She didn’t receive any alimony, and only occasionally would she receive the child support we were supposed to get, but she didn’t complain and she persevered.

Education

As a teacher it was only natural for my mother to impress upon my siblings and me the importance of our education and I couldn’t disappointment her.  I graduated from college and took the first job I was offered – night shift supervisor in an Iowa Meat Packing House.  Not my ideal job, but I worked hard and saved enough to go to graduate school where I pursued my interest in finance and economics which ultimately led me to a career as a financial advisor where I get to help people like my mother – to help individuals and families build, manage, preserve and transition their wealth – large or small.

Transitions

“Transitions” is an interesting word.  It defines a period of changing from one state or condition to another – from adolescence to adulthood; from caring only about yourself to caring for your spouse and loved ones (or not); from working for someone to working for yourself; and then retiring and dealing with all that comes next – the good and the not-so-good.  Transitions can be joyous and exciting or challenging and hard.  Many transitions are stressful and under stress people don’t always make the best decisions – financial or otherwise.

As a Financial Advisor and CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® professional every day I have the honor and privilege of helping my clients manage the four cornerstones of wealth:  Investments; Liability Management; Non-Portfolio Risk Management utilizing Insurance; and Estate Planning Strategies.  I apply my education, experience, and judgment to help them make better financial decisions…to help them balance reason and emotion…to help them focus on what’s most important.

By the Way

My mother is doing fine and enjoying her retirement.  Hard work, strong values, people you can trust and faith can result in amazing things.”
